Wearable Migraine Device Can Be Prescribed Through Telemedicine Platform

A prescribed wearable device (Nerivio, Theranica, Montcliar, NJ) made for treatment of migraine and other pain conditions is now available on a telemedicine platform (UpScript, Scotsdale, AZ). The FDA-authorized device worn on one’s arm and utilizes electronic pulses controlled by a smartphone to provide individuals with relief.

The telemedicine platform provides individuals living with migraine the option to remotely connect with their providers to assess the need for a prescription and to have the device delivered. The platform also enables individuals who have already received a prescription from their providers to submit their prescription and order the device to their homes saving a trip to the pharmacy. 

"Access to in-person medical care is an escalating challenge for many, especially in remote areas, which is why telehealth options are becoming increasingly important," said Theranica CEO and cofounder Alon Ironi. American Headache Society member Dr. Mia Minen recently recommended considering telemedicine instead of clinic appointments in certain cases, to maintain social distancing. Minen published on March 14 by the American Migraine Foundation. 

In a recent meta-analysis study published in Neurology, telemedicine was proven noninferior to in-person evaluation for neurologic disorders like migraine. 

"Our research concluded that, in terms of both patient and caregiver satisfaction, evaluations by telemedicine were comparable to traditional, in-person evaluations," said Dr. Mahan Chehrenama, DO, a neurologist involved in direct to consumer teleheadache care since 2016 and coauthor of the article.
