Servier (Suresnes, France) has entered into an agreement to acquire Edgewise Therapeutics’ (Boulder, CO) muscular dystrophy business in a transaction valued at up to $2.65 billion. The acquisition is intended to expand Servier’s rare neurology and neuromuscular disease portfolio, including the investigational agent sevasemten (Edgewise Therapeutics; Boulder, CO).
Under the agreement, Servier will pay $1.55 billion upfront, with Edgewise Therapeutics eligible to receive up to $1.1 billion in additional regulatory and commercial milestone payments. The transaction has been approved by both companies’ boards and remains subject to regulatory clearance and customary closing conditions. The companies expect the transaction to close in the third quarter of 2026.
What the Deal Includes
Sevasemten is an investigational, orally administered fast skeletal myosin inhibitor being developed for Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) and Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The therapy is designed to reduce contraction-induced muscle damage in people with rare muscular dystrophies. It is currently being evaluated in a pivotal cohort in BMD and in phase 2 development in DMD.
According to the companies, the phase 2 GRAND CANYON study (NCT05291091) in BMD is fully enrolled with 175 participants, with topline data expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. Edgewise also reported that sevasemten has received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Orphan Drug designation for BMD and DMD, Rare Pediatric Disease designation for DMD, and Fast Track designation for both BMD and DMD. The therapy has also received European Medicines Agency Orphan Drug designation for BMD and DMD.
In a statement, Edgewise Therapeutics announced that after the transaction closes, the company will focus on its cardiovascular pipeline, including EDG-7500 for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, EDG-15400 for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and EDG-003 for an undisclosed target.
