ANA Announces 2024 Scientific Award Winners

The American Neurological Association (ANA) has announced the recipients of their 2024 scientific awards, which will be presented at the organization’s 149th Annual Meeting in September in Orlando, Florida. The awards are intended to honor leaders in the field who have made contributions to neurology and neuroscience through research, teaching, and clinical practice. Awards will be presented in categories including lectureships, young neurological scholars, research and teaching, professional development, excellence, social justice, and international travel scholarship.

Lectureships will be awarded to the following recipients, presented during the ANA 2024 Annual Meeting:

  • Avindra Nath, MD, FANA of the National Institutes of Health will be awarded the Raymond D. Adams Lectureship honors.
    • Presentation title: “The Advantages and Pitfalls of Metagenomic Sequencing in Infectious and Autoimmune Encephalitis”
  • Brian Litt, MD, PhD of the University of Pennsylvania will be awarded the F. E. Bennett Memorial Lectureship Award.
    • Presentation title: “AI Applications for Implantable Devices in Neuropsychiatric Diseases”
  • Merit Cudkowicz, MD, MSc, FANA of the Massachusetts General Hospital will be awarded the Soriano Lectureship.
    • Presentation title: “Human Genetic Therapies for ALS: Current Status and Future Prospects”
  • Mercedes Paredes, MD, PhD, FANA of the University of California, San Francisco will be awarded the Derek Denny-Brown Young Neurological Scholar Award in Basic Science.
    • Presentation title: “Perinatal Neurodevelopment: Understanding the Dynamic Infant Brain”
  • Ashkan Shoamanesh, MD, FRCPC, FANA of McMaster University will be awarded the Derek Denny-Brown Young Neurological Scholar Award in Clinical Science.
    • Presentation title: “Antithrombotic Treatment Decisions in Patients with Comorbid Hemorrhage-Prone Cerebral Small Vessel and Ischemic Vascular Diseases”

Research & Teaching Awards will be awarded to the following recipients during the Derek Denny-Brown Young Neurological Scholar Symposium.

  • Charlotte Sumner, MD, FANA of Johns Hopkins University will be awarded the Wolfe Research Prize for Identifying New Causes of Novel Treatment of Neuropathy and Related Disorders – ANA Award for her contributions to the understanding of pathogenesis or treatment of neuropathies or related disorders.
  • Claire Clelland, PhD, MD, MPhil of the University of California, San Francisco will be awarded the Grass Foundation – ANA Award for her research in basic or clinical neuroscience.
  • Larry Charleston IV, MD, FANA of Johns Hopkins University will be awarded the Audrey S. Pen Lectureship Award for his work in promoting health equity and addressing health care disparities.
  • Stefano Sandrone, PhD, Med, SFHEA of Imperial College London will be awarded the Distinguished Neurology Teacher Award, which recognizes gifted and talented teachers from the field of clinical neurology or neuroscience.

Professional Development Awards will be awarded to the following recipients during the Derek Denny-Brown Young Neurological Scholar Symposium.

  • Shawniqua Williams Roberson, Meng, MD of Vanderbilt University will be presented the ANA-Persyst IDEAS Professional Development Award, which recognizes early-career ANA members who are academic neurologists or neuroscientists working in the field of epilepsy and are from underrepresented communities.

The ANA Award for Excellence will be awarded during the Derek Denny-Brown Young Neurological Scholar Symposium.

  • Clifford B. Saper, MD, PhD, FANA of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and  Harvard Medical School will be awarded the ANA Award for Clinical and Scientific Excellence, which recognizes an individual with more than 15 years of scientific contributions to the field’s conceptual understanding of neurological disorders and the development of therapeutics or diagnostic tools and technologies.
