Neuroimaging: Bolstering the Role of Neurologists

“There is no question that neuroimaging is an extremely complex subject that requires subspecialty experience, an interest, and a focus in that area. To ask a general radiologist to do that may, in some cases, provide a perfectly acceptable interpretation of a scan. But in many other scenarios, it may not. Neurologists, particularly if they’re focused in an area that requires particular imaging, may be more adept at image interpretation of those patients.”

“There are 29 cerebrovascular imaging fellowships in the United States at the best centers—Mayo, Stanford, Cleveland Clinic—run by cardiologists, for cardiologists, for imaging of the heart: It’s called organ-specific imaging. Is the heart more complicated than the brain? I would say not, but I’m biased, obviously; but let’s say it’s equal. So if cardiologists are able to image the heart, it is completely common sense that neurologists who are trained should be able to image the brain at every modality.”
