About the Cover Artist: Electric Wave by Rainbow-Wolf Sabin
The cover art for our November issue was designed by Rainbow-Wolf Sabin, an artist based in Philadelphia, PA who has been living with epilepsy for almost 20 years. Rainbow-Wolf has used art and creative expression as a method for managing their mental and physical health and the stress associated with their chronic neurologic condition. With a background in nature and travel photography, Rainbow-Wolf is exploring new artistic techniques, including the kinetic light painting process displayed on this cover.
Kinetic light painting is a photography technique whereby a long exposure is used to capture an illuminated trail of color left by a stationary light source while moving the camera around. In Electric Wave, the blue, white, and violet bulbs of a holiday light display are recontextualized as a series of spiraling, energetic dotted lines reminiscent of an ocean wave at night. Rainbow-Wolf believes that their art parallels the activity of their own neuronal synapses—a juxtaposition of serenity and chaos that creates beauty through balance and motion. At the same time, Rainbow-Wolf’s artistic process is representative of their passion for exploring new perspectives and challenges in their life, stepping out of their comfort zone to grow as a person and artist. This drive to learn and grow is also critical to Rainbow-Wolf’s professional life as a mental health therapist.
Rainbow-Wolf’s art has been recently included in the Hidden Truths Project Gallery (https://hiddentruthsproject.com/artists/wolf-sabin-rainbow), an art show featuring the work of creators with epilepsy. Rainbow-Wolf’s photographs can be viewed on their Instagram account, @RainbowWolf_Photos, on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/rainbowwolfphotos), or on their website (http://www.rainbowwolfphotos.com/).
