About the Cover Artist

After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, it took cover artist Patrick J. Murphy more than 2 years to develop his own unique approach to his art—combining photography, digital painting, sculpted paper, acrylics, and pastels that result in eye-popping, 3-dimensional impressionist pieces that invite the viewer to step into the piece.

Patrick is a classically-trained artist with a BFA from Chouinard Art Institute (now California Institute of the Arts). He honed his craft over a 35-year career as head of an advertising and marketing agency where he wrote, produced, and directed more than 500 commercials, launching hundreds of products and services. His diagnosis in 2014 marked a defining moment, and he turned his attention to creating a new form of art to fully express his view of the world. At the same time, his intention was to stimulate new neurologic pathways in an effort to slow disease progression.

An avid photographer and nature lover, Patrick began taking thousands of photographs of flowers, discovering new ways to approach them, to get inside and explore them. He creates his pieces with light from the earth, woods, mist, shadows, sky, flowers, animals, and fire, paying homage to Matisse, Monet, and O’Keeffe, infused with his own sense of playfulness.

He has received numerous awards for his dimensional art, which is available for private collections and commissions. His TEDx Talk about his remarkable story has thousands of views, and he continues to inspire audiences around the country as a keynote speaker.
