Impel Neuropharma (Seattle, WA) is developing new therapeutic formulations for delivery of therapeutic compounds to the upper nasal cavity with their precision olfactory delivery (POD) device. The POD uses a propellant to deliver drugs to the upper nasal cavity, a new route of administration, which can provide higher bioavailability and rapid uptake vs traditional nasal sprays The POD device is easy to use, requiring only that the nasal tip of the device is inserted into the nostril and squeezed once to activate dose delivery. Coordination of breathing with activation is not required, and...
The Alzheimer’s Clinical Trials Consortium (ACTC) has announced 2 studies of combination therapy of elenbecestat (Eisai, Woodcliff Lake, NJ) and BAN2401(Eisai, Woodcliff Lake, NJ and BioArctic, Stockholm, Sweden) for potential prevention of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The ACTC was formed with funding from the National Instute on Aging (NIA). In the A3 study, participants without cognitive impairment or elevated amyloid levels who are at risk for amyloid-baccumulation will be randomly assigned to receive elenbecestat alone (2 doses being tested) or placebo. Elenbecestat is...
Diroximel fumarate (DRF)(ALKS8700, BIIB098; Alkermes, Waltham, MA and Biogen, Cambridge, MA) is an oral fumarate in development for treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). Like dimethyl fumarate (DMF) (Tecfidera; Biogen, Cambridge, MA), DRF is a prodrug that is converted to monomethyl fumarate. The unique chemical structure of DRF, however, creates potential for similar efficacy with better gastrointestinal tolerability; this is supported by interim data from week 48 of a 96-week open-label safety study (NCT02634307) presented at the American Academy of Neurology May 4-10 in Philadelphia,...
