Updated World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki for Medical Research Ethics Released

10/31/2024

The World Medical Association (WMA) has released a revised version of the Declaration of Helsinki, the globally recognized ethical framework for medical research involving human participants. Ratified at the WMA's General Assembly in Helsinki on October 19, 2024, the updated declaration addresses evolving challenges in modern medical research.

Key revisions include:

  • Emphasis on responsible inclusion of underrepresented groups in research, balancing protection with the need to address health disparities
  • Stronger language on community engagement and global justice in research
  • Updated guidance on informed consent as an ongoing process
  • New focus on research integrity and misconduct prevention
  • Expanded considerations for data protection and artificial intelligence in healthcare research

It also calls for greater diversity in research ethics committees and improved oversight mechanisms. Dr. Jack Resneck, Jr, chair of the revision workgroup, stated, "These updates reflect contemporary ethical challenges while maintaining the declaration's core principles." The revised document emphasizes the shared responsibility of researchers, institutions, and ethics committees in upholding research integrity. It also addresses the need for ecological considerations in research conduct. While praised for its responsiveness to current issues, experts note that implementing these principles will require significant effort from the global research community.

The full declaration was published in JAMA and is available online.
