Remembering Ronald DeVere, MD, FAAN
Ronald DeVere, MD, FAAN, Practical Neurology Editorial Advisory Board member and former Editor of the Dementia Insights column, passed away on May 8, 2024, at age 80.
Dr. DeVere served as the Director of the Taste & Smell Disorders Clinic and the Alzheimer Disease & Memory Disorders Center and was a founding member of the Austin Cognitive Medicine Society. Dr. DeVere was passionate about treatment for movement and memory disorders, and he will be remembered for his commitment to patient education, which he viewed as a tool for easing fear and reluctance to receive medical care.
After graduating from the University of Manitoba Medical School in Winnipeg, Canada, Dr. DeVere completed his residency in neurology at Hennepin County Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. He then participated in a 1-year fellowship in movement disorders in Newcastle Upon Tyne in the United Kingdom. Together with Len Hershkowitz, MD and Marty Steiner, MD, Dr. DeVere founded Houston Neurology Associates in 1980, where he practiced until 2000. Dr. DeVere continued to practice medicine until 2019.
During his career, Dr. DeVere published numerous articles in journals including Neurology Clinical Practice, Continuum, The Journal of Clinical Neuromuscular Disorders, and Practical Neurology. Dr. DeVere also published 2 books, Navigating Smell and Taste Disorders and Memory Loss: Everything You Want to Know but Forgot to Ask.
