Global Day of Thrombectomy Stroke Awareness
The first annual World Stroke Thrombectomy Day will be announced at the Global MT Revolution Regional Conference on May 15, 2021, to raise public awareness about thrombectomy surgery for treatment of stroke. The surgery can reverse long-term stroke paralysis in the majority of individuals with severe stroke. There are millions of eligible individuals with stroke worldwide who do not receive thrombectomy care.
The global level of care received by individuals with stroke annually includes:
• An estimated 5 million individuals with stroke become disabled long term
• 2 to 3 million people are eligible for thrombectomy surgery
• Only 200,000 of these eligible individuals receive this treatment
• Close to 2 million who would benefit from the treatment if done in first 24 hours of a stroke. Blood flow is restored to the brain by opening blocked arteries with catheter-based devices through the groin or wrist arteries.
The goal of the Mission Thrombectomy 2020+ Initiative (MT2020+) is to double the ratio of thrombectomies in each global region every 2 years. The MT2020+ is issuing the following calls to action:
• Distribute resources to build regional thrombectomy systems by policy makers
• Implement regional emergency transportation protocols to individuals to hospitals with thrombectomy treatment
• Raise awareness about thrombectomy
• Increase training in mechanical thrombectomy procedures for physicians and surgeons
"We are very pleased to announce this annual global day that allows us to call on various stakeholders around the world to rapidly, equitably and sustainably continue to improve access to Thrombectomy for stroke in their regions. The first World Stroke Thrombectomy Day will be announced on May 15th when 22 countries will begin to report on the tremendous progress in thrombectomy access that has been made in their regions," said Dileep Yavagal, MT2020 Global chair and GEC cochair and Past-President of SVIN.
