Eleven Honorees Receive Awards from the American Stroke Association

The American Stroke Association (ASA) recognized 11 award recipients at the International Stroke Conference 2025. The awards honor the exceptional contributions and professional achievements of leaders in the field of stroke, recognizing accomplishments across research, clinical care, and service.

The Edgar J. Kenton III Lecture Award, which honors an individual who has achieved a lifetime of contributions in addressing racial and ethnic disparities in stroke through research, mentorship, community service, and management, was presented to Virginia J. Howard, PhD, FAHA of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

  • Lecture title: “Recruiting and Retaining Diverse and Underrepresented Participants in Studies of Stroke and Brain Health: It Takes a Village, $$$, Planning, and Long-Term Commitment”

The William M. Feinberg Award for Excellence in Clinical Stroke, which recognizes contributions to the investigation and management of clinical stroke research, was presented to Yongjun Wang, MD of Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University.

  • Lecture title: “Thirty Years of Treatment for Acute Ischemic Cerebrovascular Events: The Power of Evidence”

The Ralph L. Sacco Outstanding Stroke Research Mentor Award, which honors an individual’s achievements in the mentoring of future stroke researchers, was presented to Heather J. Fullerton, MD of the University of California San Francisco.

  • Lecture title: “Mentoring to Propel Progress in Pediatric Stroke”

The Thomas Willis Lecture Award, which recognizes basic science research contributions in investigating and managing stroke, was presented to Miguel A. Perez-Pinzon, PhD, FAHA of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

  • Lecture title: “Nature’s Blueprint for Ischemic Tolerance: Pre- and Post-Conditioning Strategies”

The David G. Sherman Lecture Award, which honors an individual’s lifetime achievements in stroke research, management, mentorship, and community service, was presented to Jean-Claude Baron, MD, ScD of INSERM, University Paris Cité.

  • Lecture title: “Fifty Years of Deciphering the Pathophysiology of Stroke”

  • The Mordecai Y. T. Globus New Investigator Award, presented to Shufan Huo, MD, PhD of Yale University
  • The Stroke Basic Science Award, presented to Heyu Ni, MD, PhD of the University of Toronto
  • The Robert G. Siekert New Investigator Award in Stroke, presented to Mohammed Elfil, MD of the University of Miami/Jackson Health System
  • The Stroke Care in Emergency Medicine Award, presented to Santosh Murthy, MD, MPH of Weill Cornell Medical College
  • The Vascular Cognitive Impairment Award, presented to Cyprien A. Rivier, MD, MSc of the Yale School of Medicine
  • The Stroke Rehabilitation Award, presented to Mei Zhen Huang, PhD of the University of Maryland School of Medicine
