CTAD 2025 Honors Takeshi Iwatsubo, MD, PhD with Lifetime Achievement Award

Takeshi Iwatsubo, MD, PhD was recognized at the 18th annual Clinical Trials on Alzheimer’s Disease (CTAD) conference as the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Alzheimer’s Disease Therapeutic Research. The award celebrates Dr. Iwatsubo’s decades of foundational work in Alzheimer disease (AD) neuroimaging and neuropathology. Dr. Iwatsubo is Director of the National Institute of Neuroscience at the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry as well as Project Professor at the University of Tokyo.

According to a statement released by CTAD, Dr. Iwatsubo has made several landmark contributions to the understanding of neurodegenerative disease. His work has helped establish amyloid beta (Aβ) 42 as the earliest amyloid species deposited in senile plaques, clarified the assembly of the γ-secretase complex, and identified phosphorylated α-synuclein within Lewy bodies. He has led multiple national AD research initiatives in Japan, including the Japanese AD Neuroimaging Initiative and the Japanese Trial-Ready Cohort.

Dr. Iwatsubo’s prior honors include the MetLife Award for Medical Research, the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) Lifetime Achievement Award, the Potamkin Prize, and the Japanese government’s Medal with Purple Ribbon.
