American Headache Society Award Recipients Recognized at the 67th Annual Scientific Meeting
The American Headache Society (AHS) recognized a distinguished group of clinicians, researchers, and educators for their contributions to the field of headache medicine with awards presented during the Society’s 67th Annual Scientific Meeting. The awards celebrate recipients’ achievements and accomplishments across headache research, education, and leadership.
Annual Lecture Awards
Recipients of the AHS’s Annual Lecture Awards were selected to deliver lectures during the meeting in Minneapolis, MN.
The Early Career Lecture Award was presented to Eric A. Kaiser, MD, PhD of the University of Pennsylvania. This award recognizes an early career researcher judged to have submitted the best research paper on headache or facial pain.
The Harold G. Wolff Lecture Award was presented to Nathaniel M. Schuster, MD of the University of California, San Diego Center for Pain Medicine. This award recognizes an individual judged to have submitted the best research paper on headache or facial pain. Dr. Schuster is also the coauthor of an article published in the 2024 May/June issue of Practical Neurology.
The John R. Graham Lecture Award was presented to Dawn C. Buse, PhD of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Buse was recognized for international leadership in headache research and education. Dr. Buse recently joined the Practical Neurology team for an episode of the “Amplifying the Patient Journey” podcast series.
The Seymour Solomon Lecture Award was presented to Matthew S. Robbins, MD of Weill Cornell Medicine. This award recognizes an individual’s outstanding contributions to clinical headache education.
Lifetime Achievement Award
The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Peter J. Goadsby, MD, PhD, MBBS of the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Goadsby was recognized for his significant and lasting contributions to headache medicine.
AHS Annual Service Awards
The following recipients of the 2025 Above and Beyond Award were recognized for their service to the AHS over the past 1 to 2 years:
- Sarah M. Bobker, BA, MD of NYU Langone Medical Center
- Mark J. Burish, MD, PhD, FAHS of UTHealth Houston
- Amy Gelfand, MD, MAS, FAHS of the University of California, San Francisco
- Christina L. Szperka, MD, FAHS of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
The following recipients of the 2025 Distinguished Service Award were recognized for their long-term service contributions to the AHS:
- Kathleen B. Digre, MD of the University of Utah
- Bernice Grafstein, PhD of Weill Cornell Medicine
- Elizabeth W. Loder, MD, MPH of Brigham and Women’s Hospital
Member’s Choice Award
A systematic review article published in May 2024 in the journal Headache was selected by members of the AHS as the most impactful work published in the previous 12 months, winning the Member’s Choice Award.
