AES Announces Free Training in Epilepsy Diagnosis Using EEG

08/22/2024

The American Epilepsy Society (AES) has launched the AES EEG Essentials curriculum---a free series of educational curricula focused on improving the diagnostic skills of health care providers. AES EEG Essentials is designed with the aim of reducing and closing the diagnostic gap in epilepsy, which according to a statement from the AES is associated with reduced quality of life, increased risk of mortality and physical injury, and impaired cognition. As of 2020, the average time between first seizure and first diagnosis of epilepsy in 16 US states was 19.2 months.

AES EEG Essentials consists of 3 sets of curricula: Core Curriculum, Intermediate Curriculum, and Advanced Curriculum. There are 25 educational modules in total across these curricula, each including a didactic lecture, multiple choice questions, and case-based EEG assessment. AES EEG Essentials is intended to provide a self-paced learner-driven program to supplement institutional training for a target audience of practicing neurologists and other clinicians, as well as neurology residents.

AES EEG Essentials is funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. More information is available on the AES website: https://aesnet.org/education/education/eeg-essentials.
