About the Cover Artist: Blue Jay on Cherry Tree by Zach Beckemeyer
Zach Beckemeyer has always had a creative side, and for many years he expressed this creativity by playing guitar, trumpet, and drums in various bands. In 2011, Zach’s life changed dramatically when he experienced a tonic-clonic seizure while riding as a passenger on the way to his nephew’s birthday party. This was the first of many seizures, and the physical side-effects of these seizures left Zach searching for a new creative outlet, which would eventually become ZJB Arts.
ZJB Arts began when Zach developed a drawing routine at a small café in Costa Mesa, CA. His illustrations take form with a pencil and sketchpad. After going over the sketches with a fine point Sharpie, Zach adds the striking colors displayed in his work using Adobe Illustrator.
Zach credits his artwork and the love and support of his family and friends, his epileptologist, Dr. Millett, and his psychologist, Dr. Marzban with helping him overcome some of his darkest days and find meaning and purpose. He also utilizes his artwork to support his local community and raise awareness for the millions of people worldwide who are impacted by epilepsy.
“Humans need a purpose, to feel useful, and a part of society,” said Zach. “I love to create and aim to unite and educate the community. A fun hobby has turned into something much more impactful. I am content, have a sense of purpose, and increased self-confidence. The support of those close to me has enabled me to break away from epilepsy’s effects, which is truly life-changing.”
Zach is excited to have others experience his art through programs like the Hidden Truths Project and The Epilepsy Foundation. He is also incredibly thankful for the support of family, friends, and his local community. He feels less like a grain of sand lost on the beach and more like a large stone leading the way in his own life.
