In a retrospective case-matched study from Taiwan published in Neurology, persons with bipolar disorder (BPD) were almost 7 times more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease (PD). Incidence of PD in people with BPD was 0.7% vs 0.1% for those without BPD (HR 6.95; 95% CI: 6.95-8.02). Onset of PD earlier in those with BPD (64 vs 73 years; P < .001). For those with BPD, the risk of PD increased with the number of hospitalizations for psychiatric symptoms. These findings suggest a diagnosis of BPD with other findings of PD risk factors (eg, positive dopamine transporter [DaT] scan...
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has provided a 4-year grant for a phase 2 study of T3D-959 (T3D Therapeutics, Research Triangle Park, NC), a novel, metabolic-focused treatment for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The PIONEER study, which will begin patient dosing in early 2020, is a double-blind placebo-controlled efficacy and safety study that will enroll up to 252 adults with mild-to-moderate AD. Participants in the study will receive 1 of 3 different oral doses of T3D-959 or placebo for 24 weeks. In a phase 2a study (NCT02560753), 34 participants with...
A prodrug formulation of levodopa-carbidopa delivered as an intestinal gel (LCIG) (Duopa; Abbvie, Chicago, IL) is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of motor fluctuations and dyskinesia in advanced Parkinson’s disease (PD). Interim analyses of data from a multisite international prospective study (NCT02611713) confirm that treatment with LCIG decreases “OFF” time (mean decrease -4.1 hours from baseline over 12 months). Dyskinesia was also reduced, as measured by a -12.7-point decrease from baseline on Unified Dyskinesia Rating Scale...
